![]() Thursday, March 23, 2006 Smoothies I am a regular reader of the blog, "Cheap Eats," which addresses all kinds of bargain meals (and some not-so-cheap meals, in the Cheap Eat Hall of Shame. However, I have never seen a post addressing the issue of smoothies, so I thought I'd address that here. I have long been a fan of the smoothie. We have several chain stores here in Southern California that specialize in them, including Jamba Juice and Juice-It-Up. Cool, sweet and delicious, the smoothies at these joints can cost you a pretty penny - even as much as a fancy Starbucks drink! And while the nutritional value varies from drink to drink, the recipes often include nonfat frozen yogurt or sherbet, both of which contribute unnecessary sugar. I prefer to make my smoothies at home in the blender, where I can control what goes into them and where they are far, far cheaper! I don't use any yogurt or other frozen delight. Instead, I toss in a variety of frozen and non-frozen fruits. I always use frozen strawberries, and then I add whatever I'm in the mood for: frozen mango, chilled satsuma sections, an apple, frozen grapes, apple juice, frozen blueberries, frozen raspberries... the list goes on. If the fruits are on the sour side, I throw in a dash of vanilla extract or sometimes just a bit of honey. Then I blend the mixture like mad... and, voila! A frozen smoothie delight, made cheaper and healthier than the retail-store equivalents. Of course, the one thing I don't have at home is the fancy "boosts" that the stores offer. Basically, a boost is a powder that they add to the drink while blending. What is in the powder depends on the boost you request: fiber, vitamins, chemicals that are supposed to "burn" your fat... whatever. But I personally think that I am getting a better mix of vitamins just by using all-fruit rather than yogurt. But that's just me. Anyway, homemade smoothies are my verison of "Cheap Eats."
